Rider Waite tarot Wheel of Fortune and the Great Year
Rider Waite Wheel of Fortune and the Great Year
by Jennifer Elaine - Jenni Method
6/2011
Waite is elaborate in his depiction of the Great Year and Precession of the equinox. It is the most symbolically detailed card in this deck. Decoding will be quite laborious and I still might not do it justice. In typical riddle fashion, Waite says, "The Sphinx is the equilibrium therein… the ssential idea of stability amidst movement." By making this statement Waite is equating the Sphinx with God who is "the stillness of the fulcrum which never moves". The definition of fulcrum is: the support, or point of rest, on which a lever turns in moving a body. Picture a playground seesaw or think of the yin-yang principle. God is unity, neither male nor female (hermaphrodite) yet is the origin of both. The bottom portion of the Sphinx is a lion, but notice the breast. The top portion of the Sphinx has a female face yet wears the Egyptian headdress of the Pharaoh. In this we see a perfect balance of unity (both male and female attributes combined). It has also been suggested that the Sphinx represents man who is a composite of Spirit (feminine) into Matter (masculine). This may be true in its own right but it is God who maintains the Law of Balance in the Universe (the Sphinx). While god is the unchanging stillness within the center, the fulcrum point from which emanates all motion, Duality is the Law of Nature and Creation. This Law of Duality is in a never ending cycle of destruction and creation.
The sword the Sphinx holds is the sword of Justice from the Justice card. Together it means The Law of Balance. Paying attention to where the sword is pointed, we realized it directs us to the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus, where lies the Galactic Center, the womb of our Universe. Ophiuchus, better known as Serpentarius, is depicted as a man grasping a serpent. He is the snake holder, the healer, the Serpent climbing the staff of Hermes. Ophiuchus translates "serpent to hold, have, or keep" and is associated with the Caduceus of medicine and healer. Ophiuchus is associated with a real person, Imhotep who lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BCE. The Sun spends only about nineteen days in this 13th sign, which is located between Scorpion and Sagittarius, from November 30 to December 17. The Serpent tempts men to wisdom, knowledge of self. The tree of knowledge grows in the middle of the Garden of Eden and the spinal fire (kundalini) that spirals up it is a great gift of the serpent. Without going into great detail here. The apple from the tree of knowledge (masculine) represents the pitutary gland and the tree of life (feminine) is probably the polmegranate and represents the pineal gland. The polmegranate has been called the fruit of the gods and has remarkable healing and longevity qualities. The pitutary gland is positively charged and the pineal gland is negatively charged. Adam (masculine) and Eve (feminine) were thrown of of the garden to keep them from "partaking from the tree of life lest they should become like gods and live forever". Put simply, our task is to activate the pineal gland (merging duality back to unity). The pineal gland is a rudementary third eye that does not develope but recedes into our forehead.
Jim Cornwell, in 'Alpha and Omega' was more forthcoming about the astrological aspects of the Sphinx saying, "And so the Sphinx was invented as a memorial guide to the heavens. It had the head of a woman and the body and tail of a lion, to tell us where to start and stop. The word 'Sphinx' is from the Greek 'sphingo,' to join—because it binds together the story's two ends, making this circle of the heavens."
This circle of the heavens is the 24,000 year Precession, the time it takes the earth to complete one wobble (like that of a spinning top) called a Great Year. In the corners are 4 winged creatures, each holding a book. These are the 4 fixed astrological signs which are said to hold up the four corners of our solar system because they do not appear to move; their moment is near imperceptible from earth. They have since been associated with the 4 apostles and were assigned related to their descriptions regarding Jesus. The book of Matthew regarded Jesus as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, so Matthew is Leo the Lion. Mark emphasized him in his obedience to Yahweh, so Mark is Taurus the Ox. Luke emphasized Jesus as son of man and connected his lineage back to Abraham and Adam, so Luke is Aquarius the Divine Man. John focused on Jesus' being the son of God and concludes with the promise of his return, a prelude to which first brings destruction as chronicled in Revelations, so John is Scorpio (sting of death) in its alternate role as the Eagle (renewal of man). As we will see, the region of Scorpio brings both destruction and renewal.
Scorpio is the only sign associated with three symbols, the scorpion, eagle, and phoenix (reborn from its ashes). This relates to its creative and destructive energies. It simultaneously seeks creation and destruction, life and death. This is in keeping with the creative and destructive energies of the galactic center of which Scorpio is also a marker. The US seal is an example of an eagle holding arrows used to symbolize the dual forces of war and peace.
In the introduction to "The Pictorial Key to Tarot," by Waite, publisher Gertrude Moakley concludes by alluding that the tarot is a gateway. He writes, "Now gateways and doorways are for entrance and exit, and we are justifiably annoyed when people stand in them and talk. Perhaps that is the trouble with so many of our gateways to truth. Having said that, I will stop talking about Waite and let him tell you about his Tarot. Unfortunately, Waite picks up the dialogue in the Preface by promising to uphold his honor by not revealing anything of significance. His writing style is difficult to muddle through but once in a while one can glean an interesting tidbit. About the Wheel of Fortune he writes, "There is a current manual which has obtained a considerable vogue in England, and amidst a great scattermeal of curious things to no purpose, has intersected a few serious (Sirius?) subjects. In its last and largest edition it treats in one section of the Tarot; which – if I interpret the author rightly – it regards from the beginning to end as the Wheel of Fortune [the great year], this expression being understood in my own sense. I have no objections to such an inclusive though conventional description." Then, as typical, he does not't explain any further. I was pleased to read this because it supports my belief that the whole of the Major Arcana is a repository of various mythologies regarding the Precession of the equinoxes and its influence on the consciousness of man. Indeed, the central card of the Major Arcana should be the Wheel of Fortune, being #10 of 20 cards (of 22 cards) with the Fool and the World card standing alone. In another article I show that these 20 cards are paired in their masculine and feminine qualities and the Fool and World cards are hermaphrodites (duality united).
The Vedas, Maya, and Hopi believe that our world is repeatedly destroyed and recreated with the end of one world being the beginning of the next. The Hopi and Maya both say that the current world we inhabit is the Fourth World. The Maya long count calendar concludes that our fourth world will end sometime near the December solstice in 2012. Whether they mean literally or figuratively is in hot dispute, but for sure prior global catastrophes are recorded in both human and terrestrial (geological) records. Also, may I point out that if the Wheel of Fortune represents the whole of Tarot and if there were no catastrophe upon this Precessional wheel, then there would be no Tower card. Its very presence tells us there is.
In the bible, the 4 creatures of Ezekiel's vision relates to the volatile creation of our solar system. But notice that he saw four sets of these creatures, each one standing beside a Great Wheel within a wheel, equating to our Precessional wheel of the Great Year of a backward moving zodiac within our familiar forward moving wheel of the zodiac. The earth's ellipitcal orbit around the sun gives us a forward moving zodiac but the sun's opposite ellipitical course in the heavens gives us the backward movement of the zodiac and the changing of the Ages. Each Age lasts about 2,000 years, interestingly enough, because Christians believe that this is the length of time before Jesus returns (although this is nowhere in the bible).
Ezekiel's vision represents four prior world creations, thus in agreement with the Maya. Revelations is the story of the destruction of this fourth world and the renewal of the fifth world and a new heaven and earth. While Ezekiel's vision is equivalent to throwing down four Wheel of Fortune cards, John's vision in Revelations is equivalent to throwing down yet a fifth. Please note the astrological references in Ezekiel and recall that Jesus said that at the end of the Age (Pisces) there will be earthquakes in diverse places and signs and wonders in the heavens.
Ezekiel 1: 4-21
"I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire. From within came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings. The creatures did not turn when they went (fixed), but each one went straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle."
These are the 4 fixed signs we see on the Rider Waite Wheel of Fortune consisting of Aquarius, Scorpio (eagle), Leo, and Taurus.
John of Revelations, having read of Ezekiel's vision, understood its astrological nature. Possessing sacred knowledge regarding the cyclic destruction and recreation of our universe John of Revelations writes:
Revelations 4... and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like an ox, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. The lamb (Zero Point Aries explained elsewhere) opens the four seals. As he does so one of the four beasts representing, Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio announces, "Come see" and one of four horsemen rides across the face of the earth. This sounds like to me that the alternating four Galactic Alignments of a Winter solstice, Spring equinox, Summer solstice then Autumn equinox, each occurring every quarter (6,000 years) brings its own brand of destruction. These Galactic Alignments certainly can bring disturbances. The Ages of Aquarius and Leo are the Winter and Summer solstices of the Great Year. Scorpio and Taurus are the equinoxes of of Spring and Autumn of the Great Year.
If one took time to match up each fixed zodiac sign with their corresponding seal and horseman we might get an idea of what each alignment held in store. When I get time later, I might do this and post it. I have always had a thing about names. For example Maddof is pronounced Made Off, like he "made off" with everyones money in a Ponzi scheme. So, I find it interesting that Mr. Waites name is almost imploring; Rider, wait. The only rider in the Waite deck is the death card.
Galactic Alignments are not the same as our yearly winter- summer solstice and spring-autumn equinox that gives us our seasons. We are talking about axis points of the earth coming into alignment with axis points of our galaxy. Our nearest point to the galactic center has beneficial effects and our farthest point from the galactic center has ruinous effects in all areas of life. There is increase in mental illness and physical afflictions, a decline in intellectual capacity, increased crime, corruption, and immorality. Sri Yukteswar reports that mankind has been suffering under the Dark Age of Kali Yuga. The coming Winter Solstice – galactic alignment of 2012 ushering in the Age of Aquarius will mark the end of Kali Yuga as we begin a slow ascension. The Summer Solstice - galactic alignment will mark the end of the Golden Age, which happens to occur when the Spring (Vernal) equinox aligns with the galactic equator. This is the Age of Scorpio, more precisely, Ophiuchus, the "serpent holder" and 13th zodiac. 12 Disciples plus Jesus makes 13. Sagittarius points his arrow at the galactic center but it is Ophiuchus who resides right over it.
Two creatures rotate the wheel. Descending, is the serpent Typhon, the largest most deadly monster feared by even the most mighty gods (planets?). His appearance was enough to scare all the gods into hiding by transforming themselves into animals (zodiac?). His bottom half was of gigantic viper coils and he made a hissing noise. His body was covered in wings, and fire flashed from his eyes. Intriguingly, his whole presentation sounds much like a fiery comet. In "Worlds in Collision," Immanuel Velikovsy equates the battle between Zeus and the sky dragon Typhon as the telling of an actual event where a comet, Typhon-Tiamet, scorched the earth. He dates this to the time of the Israelite exodus from Egypt, around 1500 BC. The recounting of this experience can be found in historical annals of people around the world as an event that brought humanity to the brink of destruction. The rotation of the earth was disturbed and terrific hurricanes swept the land because of its reversal. There was great smoke, darkness, lightnings and earthquakes. There was a great trumpeting that deafened men. Trumpeting is also an element in Revelations.
Quoting from the Kolbrin bible (dating back 3,600 years): "At the time of the great destruction of earth, god caused a dragon from out of heaven to come and encompass her about. The dragon was frightful to behold; it lashed its tail, it breathed out fire and hot coals, and a great catastrophe was inflicted upon mankind. The body of the dragon was wreathed in a cold bright light and beneath on the belly was a ruddy hued glow, while behind it trailed a flowing tail of smoke. It spewed out cinders and hot stones, and its breath was foul and stenchful, poisoning the nostrils of men. Its passage caused great thunderings and lightnings to rend the thick darkened sky, all heaven and earth being made hot. The seas were loosened from their cradles and rose up, pouring across the land. There was an awful, shrilling trumpeting, which out powered even the howling of the unleashed winds."
Ascending the Waite wheel is a Hermanubis a god combined of the Greek Hermes with Egyptian Anubis. Both assisted souls seeking their way back to God and were benevolent towards mankind. It is said that Thoth-Hermes protected Horus from the wrath of Typhon after the murder of Osiris. He has been called "The Dog-Headed" for his faithfulness and integrity. It is easy to see that the malevolent Typhon represents the Dark Ages of the cycle, while the Hermanubis represent the Golden Ages. As one descends, the other ascends and together they turn the wheel in a never ending cycle. They represent the Law of Duality, of which again God is Unity, represented as the hermaphrodite Sphinx sitting atop the wheel. Anubis was the personification of the Summer Solstice. His Egyptian zodiac sign falls between July 25 and August 28, which is equivalent to Leo, which is July 23 to August 24.
Waite has written T A R O on the wheel, which means Law, and from where we get Torah. Completing a cycle we get our spelling of Tarot. If you view the word Taro as if via a sky map (looking down-not up) you get ROTA which in Latin means Wheel or Turn. Thus saying that there is a Law (physics) that sustains the Wheel that turns and God is the fulcrum thereof. God is the unmoving center (Unity) around which moves the duality of Nature (male/female, positive/negative, hot/cold, good/evil, Golden ages/Dark ages, Typhon/Hermanubis). Coupling the word TAROT with the word ROTA proves (to me at least) that Tarot itself holds within it Sacred Sciences regarding the Wheel that turns, i.e., The Precession of the Equinox and the Unity that sustains duality.
Reference to the Precession and its relation to the rise and fall of the Ages are found in some 30 ancient cultures, knowledge of which has come down to us as allegorical myth, and only until recently being dismissed by conventional scientists. Much knowledge, although maybe somewhat fragmented, remains obscured in the Sacred Sciences and hidden mysteries. The ancients tell us that life and civilizations move in grand cycles alternating between Golden ages and Dark ages like the waxing and waning of the seasons. These Ages coincide with the Precession of the equinox driven by what ancients believed was a second star or sun in orbit with our own, making ours a binary solar system, if not tertiary. In this theory, our Sun and its companion star would orbit a common central mass known as the Grand Center, Magnetic Center, or what the Vedas call Vishnunabhi. As our sun drags us into the outer regions of space, further away from its companion and Grand Center, man and civilization slip into a Dark Age. But on our return, the closer in proximity to its companion and Grand Center the more subtle energy we receive and man's intelligence and civilization experiences a Golden Age.
A cross is formed from 4 Hebrew letters for Yahweh, YH and VH. This is called a Sun Cross, but because it divides the four seasons, it is also the astrological symbol for earth; a cross within a circle. It also represents the 4 cardinal directions of north, south, east and west and the 4 fixed signs of the zodiac, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio.
A second cross is formed from the letters TARO, marking the winter (Aquarius) and summer (Leo) solstice and spring (Scorpio) and fall Taurus) equinox. On it are the alchemical symbols (from the top clockwise) mercury, sulfur, water, salt, for expansion, integration, contraction, dissolution and pertains, among other things, to a never ending process in the evolution of Spirit. These two crosses form what is called a Double Sun Cross, and gives us our sacred 8 spoked wheel. Note that the Judgment card is number 20 (the Double Cross XX) and in it we see dissolution (destruction) which brings expansion (renewal). A double cross brings promise of renewal but by necessity is preceded by a destruction. Card 20 is the last of the duality cards before card 21 meaing completion.
Galactic Crossings bring both destruction of the old world and renewal of a new world. Again, a very much biblical reference to the sun dying on the cross and being reborn, and Revelations destruction of the world with a new heaven and new earth followed by a return of our savior (the sun). To recap, solstice crossings are not the same as equinox alignments. Galactic crossings occur only at a winter or summer solstice, and spring and autumn equinoxes align with the galactic equator. The Maya accurately calculated the Winter Solstice galactic crossing when the sun appears to "align" with the galactic center on Dec 21, 2012. Interestingly, the Summer Solstice crossing occurs at the cusp of Virgo/Leo. Notice here how the Virgin (Virgo) gives birth to the Sun (Leo).
So, we see the macrocosm mirrored in the microcosm. There was a time when I doubted that the constellations above could have any effect on us down here, but now I understand that All is One and there is no separation. The entire universe is alive with consciousness, including the planets and stars. We casually say that planet earth is a living thing. Could not then Mars be a living thing, or Jupiter a living thing? The ancients assigned the constellations characteristics meant to represent the energy that it brought based up what they saw happening in nature around them at that time. It was not simply a matter of "connect the dots". Our ancestors were much more observant of the heavens and its influence than we are today.
