The Healthy Benefits Of Meditation

When many people think of meditation, they simply think of monks that live in caves or monasteries, spending their time sitting cross-legged on the floor. Even with the amount of information available today about the benefits of meditation many people still don't try it for themselves.

The fact is, meditation is not just for monks and gurus. It makes no difference who you are or how old you are, you can enjoy the benefits of meditation. Spiritual and non-spiritual people alike have used meditation for thousands of years to help them achieve goals, feel less stressed, and experience more vibrant health.

Stress reduction is one of the most widely known benefits of meditation. Just the very act of clearing your mind and finding a quiet place to meditate will work wonders to reduce your stress levels. Even better, the sense of tranquility you'll experience extends far beyond the time that you actually spend meditating - your entire day will flow more smoothly, and you'll be able to tackle your daily tasks with a calm, serene mindset.

Reducing your level of stress opens the door for much of the other benefits of meditation. First, when you reduce anxiety and stress, you are able to focus more clearly on your daily tasks, completing them more quickly and efficiently. This leaves you more time to do what you truly enjoy -- which helps to reduce your stress even further.

Second, when you experience stress and anxiety, your body releases cortisol, a dangerous chemical that is the cause of many maladies, including cancer, diabetes, and strokes. Through meditation, you can decrease the cortisol levels in your body, helping you to avoid difficult and potentially life-threatening diseases.

Third, improved sleep is a byproduct of stress reduction, making it one of the key benefits of meditation. When it is time to go to sleep we find it hard to quiet our constant stream of thoughts, which is a direct result of the stresses of everyday life. The results are we don't get the deep sleep we need for any emotional, physical or mental healing to occur. When you practice meditation on a daily basis you will see that your sleep habits will improve, you will wake up feeling refreshed and more alive and your energy will last throughout the whole day.

Aside from stress reduction, one of the premier benefits of meditation is the ability to quiet the “monkey mind”, the meaningless chatter that goes on in most people's minds. Have you ever noticed how your mind becomes cluttered with worries, irrelevant thoughts, and negativity, even when you are trying to focus on an important task? The "monkey mind", not many of us are aware that such a thing even exists. Meditating consistently gives you the tools to quiet your "monkey mind" so you can concentrate and reach your goals much more efficiently.

Even though the concept of meditation can be rather hard for most people to learn, especially if they see their stress and mind chatter as simply a “way of life”, the benefits of meditation are well worth the effort. Even if you only dedicate a half-hour a day to meditation, you can reap a number of benefits that will change your life!
