There are many different views on telepathy. Some say it is a fantasy and thought transference from one mind to another is no more possible than it is possible for a human body to fly into outer space without the aid of a machine. Others say it may be possible, but if it is it is a rare, uncontrollable event that arises in a moment of extraordinary stress. And finally, there are those who say it is a natural and normal ability that anyone can develop. This final school of thought believes that 'How to Learn Telepathy' should be a course taught in school.
I believe a type of telepathy is possible, based primarily on the work of the British cybernetics professor, Dr. Kevin Warwick, who works in the area of nervous system - computer interfaces and robotics. But this type of thought transference has little to do with the telepathy found in fantasy, fiction and parapsychology.
I have investigated 'how to learn telepathy' techniques and I am concerned by the con artists out there that are taking advantage of people's desire to learn how to communicate with others on a more intimate, more spiritual plane. These insincere people protect themselves by stressing the importance of belief. 'The reason you can't communicate telepathically,' they say, 'is because you don't believe you can'. This approach puts any responsibility for the failure of their techniques or teachings on you. So I use this as my litmus test. If a person tells you that you will be able to communicate telepathically if you truly believe you can - run.
The mind, strong as it is in some areas, is incredibly vulnerable in other areas. The unsubstantiated belief in thought transference is one of the mind's weakest points. This is because it is normal for consciousness to consider diametrically opposed thoughts at the same time, as anyone who has ever fought with a loved one well knows. If one starts to believe that this normal function of consciousness is actually different beings speaking to the person, psychosis can result.
