The Apocalypse Tapestry is one of the most poignant wall coverings woven as it depicts God's Judgement day
Of all the Wall Coverings ever produced perhaps the one that is most poignant is the Apocalypse Tapestry in France.
The wall covering depicts the Book of Revelation written by the apostle John and it shows what he saw in vision. It shows in a series of scenes or panels, different parts of the Apocalypse or the end of days. According to a persons individual beliefs this wall covering gives graphic detailed pictures of what will happen to mankind when God brings and end to this system of things.
This wall covering was commissioned by Louise I of Anjou. (Anjou was a former duchy on the edge of Angers in western France) who was King Charles V's brother. As a wall covering it is a masterpiece despite being 140 metres in length consisting of 6 panels the workmanship that has gone into it is amazing. Wall coverings vary in their texture and makeup but the Apocalypse Tapestry wall covering unusual because it uses a low-warp technique. This is where the weavers worked horizontally from the back of the wall covering which me meant they had to keep checking where they were on the tapestry by putting a mirror below the loom and working in reflection. The wall covering was meant to be viewed from either side.
It was made in Paris, France sometime between 1373 and 1389 and unfortunately only about 100 m of the wall coverings original 140 m length is left which is remarkable considering it is now over 600 years old. Its vivid colours of red, blues and golden threads although faded still reveal how it must have been when it was originally woven.
The Chateau d'Angers houses the impressive wall covering. The Chateau is a medieval fortress houses a number of tapestry wall coverings displayed in a gallery.
The artist who drew the original cartoons for the wall covering was Hennequin de Bruges who was also known as Jan de Bruges. He was Flemish painter who produced many pieces of art between 1368 to 1381 and was famous for producing wall coverings for the King of France Charles V.
Of the many panels of the wall covering is one depicting the Apostle John measuring the Temple and quoting Revelation 11:1-2 which says :-
"Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told: ‘Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample over the holy city for forty-two months'"
Of notable interest the wall covering depicts the many beasts of revelation. One panel quotes from Revelation 11:7-8 which says :-
" the beast that ascends from the bottomless pit will make war upon them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified"
It is also interesting to see that this particular beast on the wall covering is depicted as an English Monarch.
The wall covering leaves a lasting impression on the viewers mind as to his own destiny.
