Book of Shadows
If you were a fan of the TV Series Charmed then the words Grimoire and Book of Shadows may have become new entries into your vocabulary.
A Grimoire is a textbook of magic which typically includes instructions on how to create magickal objects like talismans and amulets, how to perform magick spells, charms and divination, and how to invoke spirits, demons and angels. Often the books themselves were believed to have magickal powers.
In Europe the term grimoire is thought to originate from the French word grammaire which was initially used to refer to all books written in Latin. By the 18th century the term had gained common usage in France and had begun to be used solely to refer to books of magick. By the 19th century the term entered the English language in reference to books of magick.
Such books have been found all over the world, however, and the first such book was found in the Ancient Near East.
A Book of Shadows, rather than being a handed down collection, is traditionally a very personal collection of magickal and spiritual experiences. Wiccan witch practitioners will make their own collection of spells – successful or otherwise, as their experiences develop and grow. The Book of Shadows becomes a record of spells and spiritual development.
Bear in mind however, that not all Wiccans are witches. A Book of Shadows can also be used as a life journal of a seekers spiritual thoughts and experiences. A seeker of personal spiritual truths will record their spiritual thoughts, experiences, realisations, lessons in life, and the Book of Shadows will become a record of the seekers own very personal spiritual path, and therefore their personal philosophy of life, (sometimes referred to as a Book of Mirrors). Therefore, in another sense, the Book of Shadows still holds a magick of its own.
Wicca is a neo-pagan religion and interest in Wicca is growing. The basis of Wicca is in respect and love of our planet and of nature, and the energies around us. This seems to be something that human kind, certainly in developed countries, has lost sight of and lost respect for. Our food is presented pre-packaged and knowledge of how it was grown or raised has ceased to be a consideration on a large scale. We have lost sight of the consequences of our general way of living. Children cannot identify what they are eating or where it comes from. The established church has no answers and is out of touch with the population.
I believe it is this loss of connection with the natural world and its energies which is fuelling the great interest in Wicca. Some of us are noticing the loss of contact with the earth and its energies and feel a need to reconnect with the earth seasons, the natural order of life, and the natural cosmic order.
As you go through life, do you feel this disconnection? Do you seek a more spiritual path in your life? Your Book of Shadows may be a good tool in your journey to find your own way and your own path.
