You are one in a thousand, Mr. H. Now, may I stop by to tell you all about it? I'm only ten minutes from your home."
The voice on the phone sounded so charming and full of integrity. How could I resist? Perhaps there was a catch to this, but I finally gave in, resolving to be cautious."Okay. I'll see you in 10 to 15 minutes. Do you know how to get here?"
"Of course," he answered,"remember, I dropped off your free book yesterday in your mailbox? Thank you, Mr.H. I'll see you shortly."
Somewhat elated because I had actually won something, I poured myself another cup of coffee as I awaited his arrival. I had not even thought of asking his name, and I did not recall that he had mentioned it to me. Anyway, spending half an hour with him would not be a problem today. The children would be in bed for another hour or so,and we had nothing special planned until the afternoon. I put on a fresh pot of coffee, cleaned up the mess in the sink, checked on the birds and the squirrels once more, then picked up the book that the salesman had left the day before. As I flipped through the pages again,the doorbell rang. I put down the book, walked over to the front door,opened it and said, "Hi!"
That was all I could utter as I stood there gaping. Standing before me was a bearded man in a dark blue business suit. His hair was as black as a raven's wings and his eyes were filled with laughter. He seemed not to have aged one bit since I last saw him, many years ago. I must have been a study in marble as I stood there trying to mumble something coherent. He noticed my predicament and said,"My goodness, John,aren't you going to ask an old friend in?"
"Of course, of course," I said, as I gave him a big hug. "Come on in. I should have known it was you . . . , but how could I know it was you? For crying out loud - what are you doing selling encyclopedia?"
"I smell coffee perking. Let's sit down and I'll explain over a fresh steaming cup, if you don't mind?"
