National Acupuncture Day Registration Ends Wednesday Oct. 24 at Noon

Acupuncture has been used for over 3000 years! It is estimated that as many as 43% of Americans have used or are currently using some form of complementary or alternative therapy such as acupuncture or Oriental Medicine. In recognition of this fact and in support of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day, officially observed on October 24, is part of an effort to increase public awareness of the progress, promise, and benefits of acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day is supported through a unique international partnership of organizations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The partnership includes professional associations, research organizations and educational institutions.

Oriental medicine is a comprehensive health care system encompassing a variety of traditional health care therapies that have been used for more than 3,000 years to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. Acupuncture is one of the essential elements of Oriental medicine. Other elements include Chinese herbology, bodywork (such as acupressure and shiatsu), diet and exercise (such as tai chi and qi gong), all based on traditional medicinal principles.

All Oriental medicine modalities are intended to improve the flow of qi (pronounced "chee"). Qi regulates the body's spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and is influenced by the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). According to traditional Chinese medicine, when yin and yang are balanced, they work together with the natural flow of qi to help the body achieve and maintain health.

According to a National Institutes of Health consensus panel of scientists, researchers, and practitioners, clinical studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment for nausea caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer-related treatments, as well as for dental pain experienced after surgery. The panel also found that acupuncture is useful by itself or combined with conventional therapies to treat addiction, headaches, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, and to assist in stroke rehabilitation.

Celebrate Acupuncture Awareness Day with the highly trained staff at Enlightened Healing on Wednesday, October 24, from 5 – 8pm. According to practitioner Anali Garcia, “As part of the celebration we are providing free food and drinks, free Traditional Chinese Medical tongue and pulse diagnosis, free stress-reduction treatments with acupressure ear seeds, free tuina (chinese massage) chair mini-sessions, and free informational literature.” Additionally, the first five guests receive a $100 gift certificate good toward services with Anali Garcia, A.P.
