Spirituals, Their Types and Characteristic Features
The Negro Spirituals are really spiritual. Neither conscious artistry nor popular conception should ever take them away of this heritage, erroneous to their tradition and to the spirituals folk genius to give them completely different tone. Even though their creators beside «shouts" include in their songs also the rhythmic elements of the sensuous dance. And the main emotional effect of these elements all together completely exalted in the genuine intensities of religious earnestness. To call them Spirituals and not to treat them accordingly is unfair. Emotively, African Negro songs are really complicated. They touch upon the whole length of human moods, with its already traditional religious overtone successfully ingratiated in each instance of slave creation, but sometimes there can be observed a further a sudden change of mood in a single spiritual, contradicting a general subdivision. Emotional themes connect these songs to the race activities that they motivated, ranking them by their conformable song-types. From this point of view we have substantively four classes of spirituals, the almost ritualistic supplication songs or actual Spirituals, the freer and more unbridled evangelical "shouts" or camp-meeting songs, the folk negro ballads so much resembling the Spirituals proper that their originality has not been observed until lately, and the work and labor spirituals characterized by strict significance.
Indeed, in the Spirituals proper we can trace the broken flinders of evangelical folk rites, with confession, exhortation, "grief" talks and "love-feast" merriment as the common steps of a Protestant folk mass. It is no way a problem of religious content or allusion, for most of the slave songs it is more delicate question of the feeling scope and the way of folk use.
The distinctive feature of the Spirituals after all and their meaning is sheltered in their musical elements. The instant beauty of the Negro folk song is in its harmonic composition, unlike the other more purely rhythmic stress in the layman Negro music, which is the essentials of "ragtime" and "jazz"; while viewing the one as the African element in them, and the other as the altering influence of the religious hymn.
