Labradorite gems
Falling under the family of moonstones, labradorite is a stunning gem that is found in igneous or metamorphic rocks. It displays brilliant colors of the rainbow when hit by light in a particular angle. It is rich in sodium and is a variation of the plagioclase feldspar. The various colors it reflects when visited by light is called labradorescence or schiller. It is easy to identify labradorite. It looks like gasoline spread on water surface.
Labradorite was first discovered in St.Paul’s island in Labrador, Canada and hence its name. In France and England Labradorite found its use on various ornaments way back in the 18th century. Native Americans in Maine also used Labradorite in their artifacts. This gem occurs in opaque and translucent forms and is seen exhibiting light to dark shades of grey. The inclusion of ilmenite or magnetite only enhances its brilliance. Labradorite gems are the proud owners of an entire optical phenomenon which is commonly called labradorescence. The display of the metallic colors is directional and depends on the way light hits the surface of this gem. It has the thin layers of twinning of crystals to thank for this as this is what causes interference and diffraction of the light as it gets reflected from the parallel surfaces. Labradorite is also found in Scandinavia, India, the US and Madagascar. It is more commonly seen in silvery to light blue shades.
Most of these gems are found in its pure form and additions and enhancements are rarely encountered. There is however confusion over a white translucent labradorite discovered in large quantities in India. This gem is widely sold under the false name of rainbow moonstone. The moonstone is a far more precious gem and exhibits different optical properties than this white labradorite. However, the white labradorite is also quite impressive and is being used widely in the manufacture of jewelry today.
This gem displays some fracturing but this does not decrease its price in any way. Labradorite fits well into ornaments as pendants and earrings. It is also famous for its healing properties and is said to help in detoxifying the body. It also slows down the ageing process and is no wonder a hit among the women.
