Meet Molcajete Pig from Mexico
Throughout Mexico there is no other mortar item as popular as the traditional Molcajete Pig. Made of either a hard wood or other materials like marble or stone, a molcajete pig is used along with pestle an item which resembles a baseball bat in its shape. Together this set up can easily grind grains, herbs or medicines. Put simply, a molcajete pig is the mortar and pestle of Mexico. The direct translation of molcajete (mortar) is a Nahuatl language word from the Aztecs: "molli" the seasoning or sauce, and the bowl is the "caxitl". Salsas and guacamole, to name a few, are a few dishes to prepare which a molcajete is customarily used. Additionally, the molcajete Pig is used to mince chilies, and other cooking ingredients like herbs or spices.
