Agate Mythology and Durability. The Perfect Gemstone for Handmade Jewellery
Agate gemstones are often used to create jewellery due to their hardness, incredibly bright colours and unique, natural patterns.
Agate is a variety of chalcedony with multi-coloured curved or angular banding. It has been gathered or mined since Neolithic times. The modern agate industry grew up centuries ago in the Idar-Oberstein district of south-west Germany where agates were abundant and were collected and mined for at least 700 years until the 20th century. From about 1900 local supplies were depleted.
Today there are many different types of agate found in various regions around the world. However it is found in prolific quantities in Brazil, Botswana, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and Scotland.
Types of agate used to create handmade jewellery include Onyx in which the bands are parallel, Sardonyx which is a variety of onyx that has alternating red and cream layers and Moss agates that contain brown fern like patterns.
Along with the ornamental uses such as for bowls, gemstones and beads, agates have been used as amulets, pestle and mortars as well as for burnishers for gilding, textile rollers and as knife edges.
Agate was used as a gemstone by the Egyptians at least 3,000 years ago. Jewellery making in ancient Egypt reached its peak in craftsmanship, skill and sophistication during the Middle Kingdom, from the Eleventh Dynasty to the end of the Fourteenth Dynasty, between 2055 BC and 1650 BC, when agate along with mother-of-pearl, jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and faience, finely glazed ceramic beads, were used.
Examples of jewellery found in archaeological sites like Mesopotamia tended to be set with large numbers of brightly coloured stones including agate. The excavation of the Royal Cemetery of Ur revealed hundreds of burials dating back to 2900–2300 BC. Tombs contained a multitude of artefacts in gold and silver embellished with semi-precious stones. The Metropolitan Museum of New York has, among its collection of ancient jewellery, a stunning set dating from the early 5th century BC, late Archaic Etruscan period made from gold, glass, rock crystal, agate, carnelian. The set represents one of the richest and most impressive sets of Etruscan jewellery ever found.
Agate has many beliefs and mystical powers attributed to it. It is believed to protect against danger, cure insomnia, aid clarity allowing the wearer to see the world in a more clear cut way. It is credited with attracting good fortune, increased concentration and promoting good will. Agate is supposed to aid the wearer to overcome fears and loneliness, remove curses and spells. Many wearers credit agate with having a calming effect during times of stress. Agate was highly valued by a number of ancient civilizations because it was believed to render the wearer invisible and so protect them from harm.
Handmade jewellery made from agates is characterised by the fact that the stone is very hard and extremely beautiful. It is these characteristics that ensure that any jewellery made from agate is both enduring and attractive.
The range of colours that are available most commonly are various shades of reds, oranges, and brown, but also include whites, blacks, greys, and light blues.
