Wealth and Sex: What's the Correlation?
There is a notable graph floating around the internet which correlates personal income with happiness in America since 1957. The point to take away from the study is that below a certain threshold of earnings, people experience less happiness in their lives than people above the threshold. However, at a certain point, happiness tapers off even as income continues to rise. It may be that, as a man starts to climb the aspirational treadmill in futile attempts to equate more income with more happiness, he requires more of a stimulus to generate an equal amount of pleasure. This not only leads to all kinds of financial, political, and sexual cheating, but addiction, as well. Of course, earning more money isn't directly correlated with an insatiable desire to increase income and cheat on your wife, but a large portion of members using the extramarital dating platform, Gleeden.com, hold jobs in finance and executive positions--and claim to be married.
There are no viable studies out there that predict either the quality or frequency of sex relative to personal income, but there are indications that wealthier, powerful men cheat more than people with less money. It could be that wealthy people have more time on their hands and so are able to come by more sex than a person barely earning enough to support a family. Add in the stress factor, and--taking into account that wealthy men in power positions often deal with ample stress--what is a woman supposed to do when the things that she wants don't allow for the handful of mouths that she's trying to feed? "You've got to do what you've got to do" just doesn't leave much room for having lots of extramarital sex.
The reassuring news is that America is still one of the healthiest, wealthiest, most powerful nations in the world, so in the grand scheme of things, our sex lives are pretty fulfilling. Many of the most impoverished countries in existence either don't permit women to make important decisions for themselves or the country at large, or they simply aren't expected to in the first place. In such societies, men may have the upper hand sexually, but it'd be difficult to find someone who supports the allegation that most Afghani women in polygamous marriages are very happy with their sex lives. At least in this case, as with prostitution and sex slavery, there is likely an inverse relationship between frequency of sex and overall happiness. Those two elements of life to which most everyone aspires are likely not directly related to each other; rather, they're lurking variables of more fundamental, measurable statistics pointing to overall health and quality of life.
So what is the connection between the two? Slate reports that as women outnumber men on college campuses, their views about relationships became more negative. The converse of this equates to higher standards of sexual relations and a higher incidence of virginity amongst women. Either way, those who date others tend to accept and use pornographic materials more than their single counterparts. Very ironically, Fox News posted results from a study in July, 2010, which claims that Pakistan is home to the most searches for pornography on the internet per capita, including "searches that couldn't be printed here." Meanwhile, Pakistan has laws enforcing dress codes for women, and blasphemy is punishable by death. Life expectancy is directly related to a country's GDP, and richer people, on average, tend to live longer. (Pakistan's citizens earn more money on average than the famished North Koreans, but have a slightly lower life expectancy. Perhaps it's just that wealth buys you the time to have more sex and, like wine, it gets more sophisticated as time goes on.
While money can't necessarily buy happiness, it can procure essential goods and services that cover the necessities of life and make happiness much easier to attain and sustain. Coco Chanel said that "there are people who have money and people who are rich," but the two don't necessarily preclude each other. Those with ample wealth can afford to take time off from work, and, being the hyper-social animals that we are, we oftentimes fill up those gaps in productivity with sociable experiences. National surveys reveal that most problems in relationships are derived from economic strain and uncertainties, and divorce rates are now the lowest they've been in thirty years because people can't afford to split. Marriage is a legal union that best serves and benefits those in the top tax bracket, while love is a conceptual union of people committed to sharing deeply personal thoughts, goals, actions, and experiences. Coping with economic stresses by earning enough money to take care of necessities reduces stress and opens up lots of room for creative, original thinking.
Sex, happiness, wealth, and success exist and operate within a larger contextual network with many variables connecting each to each. I once saw a spider's web stand up to a comically absurd torrential downpour just meters from the shoreline in the tropical northeast territory of Australia--one of the happiest, healthiest, and sunniest places on earth. There wasn't any food in the net, but the big black arachnid seemed perfectly at home in it's well-built support system. Just as a spider's web is connected but spacious; sturdy yet penetrable; fixed but prey to the winds of change; our lives are inextricably linked, fused, and bound by ideas. You'd best decide where you want to set up shop--and work to maintain it--before the surrounding climate decides for you.
