6 Steps to Meditation
Meditation is now widely recognized by the scientific community and other health experts to have many positive effects on both the body and mind. Meditation increases our ability to reason and memorize information. It lets us take a break from the stresses of everyday life and analyze our feelings and thoughts from an objective standpoint. There are many meditation techniques, and for many beginners, getting meditation right is a huge challenge. But like anything, good meditation can be achieved by anyone, provided they are willing to put in the work. The following is a list of six simple steps to help beginners along.
- Your Posture
The first step in the spiritual meditation process is to assume the correct posture. Sit with your back straight and your neck straight. They should be aligned, more or less, and your limbs should be relaxed, with hands preferably resting atop your lap or knees. Keep your mouth partly open and your eyes closed or half-open. You don’t necessarily need to assume the full lotus position. Sitting cross legged or in a chair or bench, so long as your back is not resting against the backrest, is alright. -
Breathing pattern
Getting the right breathing pattern down is essential before delving into the deeper aspects of the meditative process. Focus on taking deep, slow, rhythmic breaths. Inhale and hold the air inside for a brief moment and then exhale carefully. Some find it helpful to chant “OM” as they exhales, as it helps keep a steady rhythm. Once you’ve achieved a proper, comfortable breathing pattern that you can continue without thinking much about it, move on to the next step. - The objective observer
The next step is to detach yourself from your minds conscious activity. Realize that you are not your mind and detach yourself from it, so that you become an outside, objective observer, watching your minds activity without any judgments. Observe your emotions and thoughts and do nothing else for several minutes. Eventually your mind will stop wondering around and will settle into a calm state. - The Silent Mind
Now that you have achieved a kind of mental distance from your own mind, focus on clearing your thoughts and achieving a state of inner quiet and harmony. This silencing of the mind is one of the hardest things for many people. This is because we are used to our minds always thinking about something, and making your mind blank feels unnatural at first. But if you keep at it, you will discover a whole new way of looking at things. - Oneness
Now that your mind is silent, it is time to delve even deeper into it. Start by reactivating your mind but this time direct its attention to the connections that exist between yourself and the rest of the world. Realize that all animals, plants and objects are connected. -
Sharing your happiness
The last, but one of the most important, steps in spiritual meditation is to project positive energy onto the universe. You do this in the same way that you pray. Simply take the serenity and inner awareness that you have and wish well on others around you.
