Learn How To Meditate

by kevin on August 7, 2009

The process of meditation is similar among many various cultures and religions. This holds true in many aspects of meditation, from planning your meditation session to using the correct posture, the best time to meditate, choosing the right place to meditate and recognizing your emotions and thoughts. It is important to take all these things into consideration but don’t get too consumed with perfecting any one thing when you start to learn how to meditate.

Before you can start to unwrap the many years of programming you will need to create within yourself a great desire and sense of urgency to want to change. It is necessary that you learn how to meditate the right way to get the most from your meditation experience.

Choose Your Meditation Spot

Find a room that is quiet and free from distractions and noise. You may choose a place in your home that fits this criterion as long as the room gives you an uplifting feeling and is secluded enough to allow you to spend at least fifteen minutes uninterrupted. The spot you choose will begin to absorb the vibration you create during your meditations so if at first you don’t have a perfect spot don’t fret you will be programing the spot you choose. Very soon you will be able to attain much deeper meditative states and your meditation area will continue to absorb and reflect your vibration

When To Meditate

Try to develop a routine and a regular time that you meditate each day. I find that the morning works best for me because I haven’t been overwhelmed with my daily chores and duties. Our daily activities put us under a lot of stress and the demands make it harder for us to have a good meditation when we try to sit and relax. If you want your day to be more joyful and relaxing be consistent with your morning meditations.

Planning Your Meditation

Planning your meditation is important when you start learning how to meditate. To have a productive meditation it is important to be in the right frame of mind. Don’t meditate as soon as you get home from a long day because you will wind up spending too much time trying to relax your mind and body. Your meditation would be more productive if you went for a walk to help you unwind first. If you are tired than maybe you can take a cool shower or even an energizing fresh fruit drink. This is a good way to prepare yourself to have a productive and relaxing meditation.

Posture

There are many different positions you can use when you are meditating but when you are just learning how to meditate it is best if you were in a seated position. Sit on the floor on a cushion or in a chair that has a straight back. Picture the energy traveling from the ground through your body and out through your head. Picture your body being pulled upright by an imaginary rope that is attached to the top of your head. This will give the energy a free flowing channel to travel through

Place your hands on you thighs and relax your fingers letting go of all the tension in your arms and hands. Tuck you chin downwards and start to relax you jaw and your tongue. Rest your tongue against the top of your mouth or up against your upper teeth while keeping your mouth open slightly. Focus your gaze with half opened eyes, seeing but not really noticing anything. Place yourself in a state similar to that of a trance where you are aware but not aware at all. It is the same manner in which we deal with any sounds: you hear the sounds but you don’t pay attention to the sounds. They become a background symphony for the experience of the meditation, having no more importance than the background noises we hear and ignore all day long.

The Breath

When you start to learn how to meditate you will notice that your mind is jumping wildly from thought to thought as our minds struggle to gain control once more. You must learn to let go of these thoughts and focus your attention on your breath. To remain focused on your meditation it is a good idea to count your breaths. When you count your breaths, one breath in and one breath out will be a count of one. To help train yourself to quiet your mind try doing a series of 15 to 20 breaths. As you breathe in picture yourself breathing prana energy in and as you breath out imagine all your tension and stress being released with each breath. Prana is the life force of God. As we imagine breathing in prana we are learning to tap into the universal consciousness and fuel our bodies with this life giving energy.

As you start to master your thoughts and your body you notice that you are in that place where you are now in control of your thoughts and health. A world where you are in control of your fate and your happiness. You are starting to relax and experience what it means to be in a basic state of goodness and peace, a boundless place of deep understanding and serenity. A deeper understanding of the unlimited being you are meant to be. You are breaking free from your restraints and are no longer bound by the illusions you have placed on yourself.

Enjoy learning how to meditate and as you begin your journey it would be a good idea to get instructions from a well-regarded practitioner that will give you the support and teachings you need to succeed.
