What's the best way to learn hindi if you know Gujarati?
I learned Gujarati just from being around family that spoke it. Everyone says Hindi is just about the same so I should understand it, but it may as well be Greek, because I can understand very little. I'm trying to learn. I've done the Pimsleur audio CD course which I found to be helpful, but that was really just a start. I'm at a loss of what to do next to get better, but *everyone* tells me just to start watching Hindi movies, and I'll pick it up. I'm skeptical, but the sheer number of people who've told me that have convinced me to try that. Any other ideas/help? Thanks!
Hindi movies help. Um..try conversing with family or friends who know both languages that can guide you. Believe me, the languages ARE similar...when you start to learn it you will realize it on your own.
Here are two similarities:
Guju: Maru naam BLAH che
Hindi: Mera naam BLAH hain
Note that they are *SIMILAR* and not exactly alike and this is just one example...and I won't kid you...there are certain other factors that make learning Hindi tricky but practice speaking it with friends/family is the best thing you can do. Practicing speaking is key! It's how I learned a lot of the languages I know...that are far different from Hindi and Guju. Hope this helps!
Good luck!
