Tranquility Amidst the Chaos of Qingdao: The Zhanshan Temple
Many Buddhists as well as enthusiasts of Buddhist temples and monuments flock to China each year from all parts of the world. Apart from providing visitors a deeply spiritual experience, China's Buddhist attractions are often extraordinary in their architectural design and surrounding natural beauty. Each Buddhist temple in China carries the rich history of China and pays tribute to the era of the dynasty it was built in.
The Zhanshan Temple is China's most recent addition to its large collection of Buddhist temples. Situated in Qingdao in Shandong, China, the Zhanshan Temple is the only temple found in this urban city. Structured on the eastern foot of Taiping Hill, the temple was named thus with the name ‘Zhanshan' translating literally to "deep mountain". The temple was built from 1932-1945. Facing the vast ocean, this beautiful temple consists of three courts and five rows of buildings, each built using the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty. The buildings, covered in black tiles and built with gray bricks, are rectangular in shape with the only exceptions being the Olympic Mascot Bell Tower and the Stupa. On either side of the Zhanshan Temple's gate sit two grand relics of stone lions of the Ming Dynasty. A beautiful lotus pond with a statue of Kwan-yin sitting in it greets visitors at the front of the temple. This pond serves as a place for freeing animals held in captivity.
The temple's east court serves as a home for ageing monks and houses the temple's dining rooms. In the western court visitors will find a memorial hall as well as a few Buddhist structures. The middle court contains the main buildings of the Zhanshan Temple, including the Grand Hall, Hall of Sakyamuni, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Hall of the Three Saints, Hall of the Recumbent Buddha and a sutra depository. Each hall found in the temple's complex contain a large number of exquisite statues, including beautiful and serene of the Buddha, the four Heavenly Kings and priests, all coming together to compose various scenes of the Buddha's life. The main Bell Tower and Drum Tower are seen on either side of the Hall of Heavenly Kings. The temple is also home to a library that holds of 6000 volumes of sacred scriptures, the Shandong Zhanshan Buddhist College, the Qingdao Buddhist Association and guest rooms.
