English a Window on the World

“A window on the world”.

Language, so far as we know, is something specific to humans, that is to say it is the basic capacity that distinguishes humans from all other living beings. Language therefore remains potentially a communicative medium capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well as moods, feelings and attitudes.
A set of linguists who based their assumptions of language on psychology made claims that language is nothing but ‘habit formation’. According to them, language is learnt through use, through practice. In their view, ‘the more one is exposed to the use of language, the better one learns’.

Window is a security system for all, either for a house or for a computer. An open window Cannot solve the purpose rather a window with zigzag grills is more safe and useful for a house. Inspite of the intricacies of grammar ie. zigzag grills English has gained tremendous importance in the education system and economy .English has become a truly universal language “a window on the world”.

Frankly speaking, it is highly essential to know the language for communication. In general, the most popular language is English. In this computer age, English is the only language that any one can understand. So to say, it has become as an ideal language for expressing our feelings. First, we have to learn the language and then we have to gain fluency in the language. Unless we have the fluency in English language, it would not be possible to work with the computer. If you do not know English, then you would be in need of a translator to do the job.

One might suppose, there-fore, that linguists would have a clear and reason- ably precise notion of how many languages there are in the world. It turns out, however, that there is no such definite count—or at least, no such count that has any status as a scientific finding of modern linguistics. The reason for this lack is not (just) that parts of the world such as highland New Guinea or the forests of the Amazon have not been explored in enough detail to ascertain the range of people who live there. More than you might have thought. When people are asked how many languages they think there are in the world, the answers vary quite a bit. When we look at reference works, we find estimates that have escalated overtime. The 1911 (11th) edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, implies a figure some where around 1,000, a number that climbs steadily over the course of the twentieth century. Much pioneering work in documenting the languages of the world has been done by missionary organizations (such as the Summer Institute of Linguistics) with an interest in translating the Christian Bible. As of 1997, at least a portion of the Bible had been translated into 2,197different languages, still a long way short of full coverage. Languages, generally taken to be as authoritative as any, is that of the Ethnologue organization, whose detailed classified list currently includes 6,809 distinct languages.

 Languages of India

According to (LANGAUGES OF INDIA, 1991 CENSUS)

 In India alone there are
18 scheduled languages,
114 other languages,
216 mother tongues,
96 non specified languages,
Approximately 1000 languages

Despite the different languages and dialects, most of the official languages speakers have developed a standard of speaking language which has become the accepted style of speaking for that language. Most of the schools, especially in the cities and towns, have English as the first language and all communication, written and spoken, takes place in English. A person coming to Mumbai city for a job, will be unable to get one if he does not know the English and Hindi languages. Indians speak fluent and correct English. However, their English accent is completely different from the British and American English. Indians migrating abroad have to necessarily change their accent in order to be understood by foreigners.

According to a recent survey, knowing a foreign language can boost your income, and foreign language speakers are also seen as , more intelligent and more interesting.

Languages 'boost work and love'

People who are able to speak foreign languages have increased earning power and are popular with the opposite sex, a report suggests. Speaking a second language can increase an average worker's salary by 2,00,000 a year.Among higher earners the difference is even greater, a survey of 2,700 firms found nine out of 10 thought their businesses could benefit from better language skills. The sector most in need of language skills is media, sales and marketing, according to the companies surveyed.

"We cannot forget that English is our window to the world and (its use) cannot be avoided. Even countries like China and Japan are now taking to English in a big way." Not only was English the language of technology, but it was also a tool of communication,

By encouraging children to learn English as a second language early on, we are setting them up for a number of advantages that will carry out through the rest of their lives. The 2002 U.S. Census indicates that approximately 14% (more than 7.5 million) children between the ages of 5 and 17 are fluent in more than one language, and this number is expected to increase in the coming years. However, the benefits of learning English reach beyond economic, educational, and employment advantages. It also increases a child's linguistic abilities because bilingual children are better able to comprehend the complexities associated with a particular language's meaning and grammar. Since some words across various languages share a similar pronunciation and vocabulary, the connection is made for children early on and makes learning a new language more attainable. In addition, children who learn English as a second language are able to expand their vocabulary across both languages at a faster rate than their mono-linguistic peers.
