Organic Cat Nip- Catnip Facts
Catnip is aromatic herb in the mint family. Humans use catnip for herbal remedies and teas and have done so for centuries. Cats (felines) respond to the nepetalactone, a chemical compound contained in the aromatic herb. The nepetalactone produces a harmless physiological reaction in some cats. It is almost like a kitty aphrodisiac in both male and female cats. It only takes a pinch or two to bring forth a change in behavior. Crushing the dried buds or leaves of organic cat nip between your fingers activates it. Then you can sprinkle it on the cat's scratching post, bed or on a favorite toy.
Not all cats respond to catnip and actions vary. Some cats become possessive over their catnip toys and aggressive. If your cat exhibits aggressive behavior after organic cat nip use, try an alternative herb such as honeysuckle or valerian. However, for most cats it elicits only harmless reactions such as rolling in the catnip, rubbing their cheeks on the area where the catnip is sprinkled, rolling up into silly positions, running around and playing like kitten or lying down and falling into a dreamy state for a while. Your cat may exhibit all or one of these reactions.
Catnip is safe for cats and the reaction to it is inherited. Your cat must have this inherited gene to react to the catnip. Cats that are not yet sexually mature (under 6 months) generally do not react to catnip regardless of their genes. Therefore, do not try to use the catnip until the cat has reached maturity. The organic cat nip is grown under controlled conditions and void of any pesticides. When purchasing organic catnip, look for labels that confirm it is 100 percent organic. Any label that states organic or 100 percent organic means the product in truly organically grown and pesticide free.
All aromatic oil-bearing herbs will lose potency over time. For this reason, it is best to store the organic cat nip in the freezer to maintain freshness. If you cannot store it in the freezer, other alternatives include a tin box with lid or a ceramic crock. Keep the lid closed tightly and the container in a cool, dry place. Keep the container out of direct sunlight as well. Never put the organic cat nip in the cat's food or water. It is not harmful when ingested, but it can upset the cat's diet and eating habits.
