The imaginative Blue Gem
Lapis is blue, but this blue is found in an array of colors from dark blue to medium royal. The best quality of this stone is found in northern Afghanistan and the thing which makes this stone really impressive is its fewer flecks of golden pyrite with little white calcite veining.
The microcrystalline rock that primarily consists of the mineral lazurite is known as lapis lazuli. In is dark blue color, there are some golden pyrite inclusions in this stone. Besides Afghanistan, Chile serves as one of the biggest hubs of lapis lazuli, but when it comes to the quality and vividness of this stone, no other lapis lazuli can be the parallel of Afghani lapis lazuli.
There are little pores on the surface of this stone and that’s why it is quite important to protect this stone from soap and other solvents. If you want to clean your lapis lazuli, it is better to use mild hot water for this purpose, as chemicals found in soap and other detergents can be harmful for the composition of your gemstone. Lapis lazuli is bit a soft kind of stone, and you need to protect it from scratching from other hard stones.
The value of lapis lazuli is determined by its color and the stone with intense violet tones is considered the most precious stone while those stones which have higher calcite inclusions, lower the value of this stone. However, a large number of gem collectors and jewelry lovers seem to prefer a gemstone with higher amount of pyrite.
Most of people like to wear this stone in silver, but it also looks staggeringly impressive when jutted in white gold or platinum. In past lapis lazuli and its blessings were limited only to the bigwigs of some society, but these days the stone is being widely used by laymen, as one nice thing about lapis lazuli is that it’s no more as expensive as it was in the past. Now people look for diamonds, rubies and sapphire instead of lapis lazuli. But it doesn’t mean that the stone has lost its previous glory and charm which has been dazzling people for centuries.
