Crystal Repair: Leave It Up To a Professional
Crystal glass is one of the most stunning materials in the world used for art, jewelry, lighting fixtures, and glass sculpture. Its ability to capture and reflect light makes it highly prized and collectible. In fact, some glass crystal pieces have lasted for centuries and are part of museum collections and family estates.
Whether or not your crystal pieces are expensive Swarovski or Waterford collectibles or they simply have important sentimental value, damage that occurs to them can be devastating. The good news is that damaged crystal can be repaired, although it requires specialized knowledge and years of experience to do it right. If you really want to maintain or restore a piece of important crystal glass you should make every effort to have it done right the first time.
If your crystal gets damaged or broken, here are some important things to remember:
- Safety first! Handle your broken crystal with care, making sure you don't cut yourself or leave pieces lying around that can get stepped on.
- Collect all the pieces in a safe place to ensure the crystal repair artist has everything they need when they are ready to begin. You should wrap the larger pieces up in bubble wrap and place small pieces in a plastic container or zip lock bag and then box them all
- Don't try to repair crystal yourself if you haven't received specialized training. A crystal repair artist has experience, knowledge and special tools that will restore and preserve your crystal. If you attempt to fix it yourself before giving it to a crystal repair artist you may end up making the repair more difficult and more costly in the end.
- When looking for someone to help you repair your crystal, seek out someone who has experience working specifically with glass sculpture and glass art
Don't be afraid to ask questions or voice your concerns to the person who is doing your glass repairs. He should be able to answer your questions and give you a good estimate of how how long the project will take, and what methods will be used before he even starts working.
When interviewing a professional for your crystal repair needs, be sure to ask for references and look at their experience and qualifications. A crystal repair artist is just that: an artist. His knowledge of crystal and glass sculpture is both technical and aesthetic. You can rest assured that your family's heirlooms and collectibles will be treated with the kind of reverence and respect that they deserve.
