Unearthing Hidden Indie Music Gems
If Indie music is where your heart resides in the sonic landscape, then you've probably listened to the bands "Death Cab for Cutie", "The Decemberists", "Bright Eyes", "The National", and "Mumford & Sons", but have you heard of "Rocky Votolato, "William Fitzsimmons", or "Great Lake Swimmers"? If you have, that's wonderful, but I'm certain that you know of many bands and artists that my expanding ears never have been introduced to and would thank you immensely for. The problem is, how can local, emerging Indie bands have a chance at grabbing your soul through your headphones? Finding new music when you're craving something new to listen to but you can't find anything really is one of the most frustrating things, but when you do, it feels so great.
It's hard to find new music, let alone unique Indie outfits. The first obstacle is the location of the band. San Diego, California, Seattle, Washington, and San Francisco, California have large and dynamic local music scenes, which helps local reach global easier and at a faster pace, but how about the new Indie band hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan? They're going to have a more difficult time gaining the local word of mouth exposure, which converts into global exposure.
There are several places online where bands can post music videos, their upcoming concert dates, and even sell their music, however, without the driving force of their local fans, it's extremely difficult to gain traction without a floor to launch from. It could be done with huge marketing efforts, but most bands are focusing on creating new music, digging deep into their lives to find an inspiration for a new lyric or song, and simply having fun. The unfortunate truth of the matter is, as fun as bands are meant to be, there's also a very important business side. In fact, there are many published books on the subject matter of band management and band marketing. The bands that have the business angle covered are going to gain traction and exposure at a much faster and more meaningful rate. What can you do to help right now? There's so much amazing, undiscovered music to find and treasure. So get out there to support your local Indie bands, and tell everyone about them! It sounds simple enough, but we sometimes forget.
I really want to emphasize in more depth that local needs a global home. If the band's marketing is solid and its fans are passionate (no matter the number), the fans are ready and wanting to spread the exciting news. The issue is that there are music forums, music radio services, music listening services, but there isn't a live, centralized place for the sharing and discussing of all things music. While Facebook and Twitter are good outlets to share information to friends and family at a semi-local, semi-inclusive level, they're not so helpful for telling someone you don't yet know in Auckland, New Zealand, if you reside in California. A current, popular music website that bridges the local to global gap is what's needed to give these artists a fighting chance at gaining interest in different regions in a timely manner.
