The Many Benefits of the Frankincense Oil

Frankincense oil is an aromatic resin that is tapped from the Boswellia tree. The bark of the tree is slashed the resin is bled out and allowed to harden forming what are known as tears. There are several species of the Boswellia tree amongst which four are frankincense oil producing species. These trees are part of the Balsamic family and are known to have the ability to grow out of solid rock. Trees grow for 8 to 10 years before they are ready to start producing the aromatic resin. Mature trees are tapped a maximum of three times a year. This is done to allow the resin to collect higher content of terpene, diterpene and sesquiterpene. These compounds are responsible for the aromatic quality of the resin. Limiting the taping of mature trees is also done to allow mature trees the chance to produce healthy germinating seeds. Less than 16% of the seeds produced by over tapped trees germinate. The tears collected from the trees are allowed to harden before they are processed. Frankincense oil is extracted from the dried resin by distillation of the tears resulting in jonquil or colorless liquid that is aromatic. A touch of lemon may be added to the oil to enhance its properties.
Quality of Frankincense Oil
There are many types of Frankincense oil whose quality is determined by the color, aroma, purity, shape and age of the resin. Hojari and Silver Frankincense oil are considered to be the two highest grades. The oil considered the best amongst these two oils still remains debatable. People from different regions consider different oils to be of higher quality than others. Dhofari is considered to be the best by the Yemeni, the Omanis consider Silver to be the best while the western world prefers Hojari. The difference in preference may be due to the different climatic conditions in these areas and how well the different Boswellia trees do under these different conditions. Trees producing Silver Frankincense oil do better in hot, dry conditions. Hojari smells best in cold, damp climates such as those in North America and much of Europe.
Frankincense Oil for Medicinal and Health purposes
Frankincense oil has been in use for medicinal and health purposes for more than 3500 years. The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, recommended chewing a mixture of the incense mixed with honey for the treatment of coughs and other lung ailments. It has been used by ancient Arabian doctors to stop bleeding, treat diarrhea and vomiting as well as to heal wounds. The oil was a popular drug in ancient China to treat leprosy and other skin ailments. Avicenna Frankincense oil was used in ancient China to treat tumors, sores, malaria and dysentery. Modern health care practitioners use Frankincense oil as an astringent, antiseptic and anti inflammatory agent. It is used in the treatment of wounds, oncological diseases, ulcers, hemorrhoids, respiratory diseases, relieving PMS, promoting menstruation and relieving stress. The oil is also used to reverse the effects of ageing by combating wrinkles. Uses for Frankincense oil have also been found in homeopathy, perfumery and aromatherapy.
