How To Build Your Own Cat Tree
It is almost a necessity to have a cat tree if you are a cat owner. However, sometimes you just do not have the funds to buy one. Do not worry yourself. Because now you can make one for your cat. This is an inexpensive way because most of the materials can be found in your backyard. Making your own cat tree will truly save you lots of bucks.
Think about the design of your cat tree first. How many tiers would you want it to have? The decision is yours to make. You can even personalize your cat climber, one that suits your cat's personality. Make your creative juices running. Choose a shade that you and your cat like. By having a first-hand input on the design, the bond between you and your pet will grow stronger. Try out different shapes and sizes but make sure that it will fit the place where you intend to put the cat tree. The design of the cat tree is important for it demonstrates how much you love your cat. Be reminded that the cat tree you are going to build is for your own beloved cat, not just anybody else's. So tickle your mind and be creative!
The next thing that you have to do is examine the structure of the design. Can the cat tree offer the right amount of exercise? Make sure that your cat furniture can serve a lot of purpose; otherwise, your cat won't get the health benefits that a cat tree should provide. The height should be purposefully located so that your cat can make jumps without putting it in danger. The cat tree should have a scratching post that your cat will use to trim and sharpen its claws. Without a scratch post, you may see your cat scratching on your valued furniture. Aside from being the ultimate gym place for your cat, the cat tree should also be a place for relaxation. It should have a place to rest on. A cat tree, after all, must be a fun place as well as a leisure spot for your kitty.
Here are the materials that you need to build your own cat furniture. These are the most basic materials but you can add some more depending on your design.
· Fake fur
· Carpet tubes or circular boxes
· Wood screws
· Box nails
· Scrap lumber
· Pieces of plywood
· Sisal rope
· Sonotube for the perches
· Catnip (aka catmint or catswort)
· Pet toys
The things you need are not very expensive if you know where to look. You may even acquire them at no cost at all if you already have them in your own stock room or backyard. If there is a carpet warehouse near you, you can ask to buy some carpet tubes. If you are lucky, they may even give them to you for free if they do not want them or just about to throw them away.
Next, prepare your tools. You will use hammer, tape measure, saw, drill, screw driver, pencil, wood glue and glue gun. If you already have these at hand, begin building your cat tree.
Start constructing the base of the cat tree. Then make posts based on your design. Attach the foundation and the posts together. Align the perches and fasten them into place. Wind the sisal rope around the designated scratching post. Select the toys that you wish to add to the cat tree then attach them where you want them to hang.
When you are done building the cat tree, it is time to inspect if it is safe enough for your cat to use. Slivers of wood, pieces of nail, or any pointed objects have to be removed for they can do harm to your cat. Your cat will surely love a catnip-scented cat tree so sprinkle some leaves of it around.
It may take around 5-7 days to create one cat tree. However, it really all relies on your timetable and woodworking skills. If you use your creativity, you will be able to build the ideal cat tree for your beloved pet.
