Orlando Bloom from Pirates to Middle Earth

Orlando Bloom is most known for his stunning good looks and the roles that he played in the movies, “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” He has also been in movies such as “Blackhawk Down,” “Troy” and “Elizabethtown.” He also made his stage debut in the play, “In Celebration,” at the Duke of York’s theatre.

He was also named Teen People’s 25 Hottest stars under 25.  He was People Magazine’s hottest Hollywood bachelor in 2004, and received an MTV movie award in 2002. As well, UNICEF has named him an international ambassador where he plans to focus attention on needy children worldwide.

Bloom was born in Canterbury, Kent in England and was named after the 16th century composer Orlando Gibbons. Growing up he believed that his father was South African anti-apartheid novelist, Harry Saul Bloom, until his thirteenth birthday when his mother revealed that his biological father was really her partner and family friend, Colin Stone.

He struggled with dyslexia through out his school years graduating from St. Edmund’s school in Canterbury. His mother encouraged him to take drama classes and in 1993 he moved to London to follow a two-year course in drama, photography and sculpture at the Fine Arts College in Hampstead. He also joined the National Isa Theatre for two years earning a scholarship to train in the British American Drama Academy.

Bloom started his acting career in television shows such as “Casualty” and “Midsummer Murders.” His first role on the big screen was in 1997 in the movie “Wild.” His break-out role was of course, in “The Lord of the Rings” movies. He originally auditioned for the part of Faramir but the director, Peter Jackson, decided to cast him as the elven prince Legolas, instead.

Orlando Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and became a full member of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist association affiliated with the teaching of Nichiren, a 13th century Japanese monk.

Also in 2002 a common friend introduced him to actress Kate Bosworth. They had an on-again-off-again relationship until they split in September 2006. In 2007 Bloom met and started dating Australian model Miranda Kerr. Orlando Bloom’s career is bright and there are sure to be many more films in his future. With his wonderful acting and roguish good looks it is certain he will be remembered as one of the classic actors of our time.
