Natural Stone Characteristics and Features
Every sandstone floor has a look and personality. There are numerous stone colors, textures and style. Natural sandstone floor tiles come with different kinds of edges: a polished bull-nose edge that has a rounded, curved appearance finishing into a straight edge that offers a real contemporary look.
There are basically three types of rocks from which floor stone are cut. These are;
Sedimentary, which produce travertine and limestone,
Igneous, which gives granite
Metamorphic, which gives slate and marble
Travertine is a crystallized, partially metamorphosed limestone, formed by natural mineral springs. It is made up of honeycomb structure and pitted surface. It comes in two basic types: natural & filled. The pits are filled with resign or grout to lend every tile, a solid surface or left unfilled for a more highly textured surface. The filled up areas of the stone do not get polished which brings out a mesmerizing, interesting contrast. The stone present s a bouquet of warm, interesting colors from ivory to Persian Red & Dark brown. Owing to its porous surface, travertine will require resealing.
Limestone is actually a kind of marble which is formed with the consolidation of seashells and sediments. Each stone has a certain amount of surface pitting, fossilized shells, fissures and mineral striations. Some amount of edge chipping is also there. It is the right choice bathrooms, dining rooms and hallways and ranges in color from ivory to golden brown to black.
Natural sandstone is a kind of stone that is composed of loose grains of quartz sand that is rough in texture. Within a course of time sand is compressed and water forms this coarse-grained rock. As sandstone is a hard yet porous stone, it should be tightly sealed when used as flooring. Sandstone in Houston is popular for exterior decor.
Granite is the hardest of all the stones used in flooring. It consists of dense grain, which is highly impervious. Granite is formed from liquid magma, a substance found in the earth's core. Marble is a metamorphic rock prominently used in rich floors. This crystallized limestone offers different color variations. It usually includes a profound pattern of color that contrasts with its base color. Marble has a sort of elegance which makes it first choice of the majority for foyers, dining rooms or any other room which needs a mix of class and sophistication . As marble is more porous than granite, it is more prone to stains. So not really the best choice for kitchen floors. The properties of marble change according to its color. Green and black marbles are not recommended for wet floors.
Slate is a fine – grained metamorphic rock which can be effortlessly split into sheets. Slate is made up of clay, quartz and shale. It is blessed with high versatility, can add a rustic appearance to the room as the natural clefting along the surface presents a highly layered look. It is dense making it apt for use for floors, walls and roofs. Slate is highly water-resistant making it ideal for outdoor use in patios and pool surrounds.
