Paddock Notes for Good Horse Racing Handicapping and Successful Bets
If you are fortunate enough to be able to visit the race track, rather than just betting from an OTB or online, then by all means, go and enjoy the spectacle and opportunity to make some notes and do some horse spotting. Horse spotting is nothing other than looking at the horses and estimating each ones fitness and energy level.
Before the race and post parade, go to the paddock and saddling ring and watch the horses and people tending them, you may spot something very helpful. If you are following a specific horse or a trainer's horses, you may notice that a horse is racing with a tongue tie or nasal strip that it wasn't wearing before. A tongue tie can turn a quitter into a winner and yet, they are not listed in the equipment changes.
I personally think they should be listed because they do make a very big difference for some horses. How will you know that a horse is wearing a tongue tie when it wasn’t wearing one before? The only way to have this information is to keep notes. I know what you're thinking, you don't want to have to keep notes about every horse, but keeping track of some well bred horses that are just starting out is a great way to make good bets.
The reason is that the trainers are just learning about the horse and trying to figure things out and try new things. If they put a tongue tie on a horse and exercise it and see improvement, you can bet it will be wearing the tie in its next race. Who will know about? The trainer and insiders at the track, that's who. They will also be the ones cashing tickets after the race.
If you are smart and sharp enough to spot the tongue tie on the young horse, then you may be cashing a good ticket along with them.
There are other ways to use paddock notes, too. You can notice how enthusiastic the trainer and jockey appear, or how listless they appear. If they seem to think their horse has little chance, and sometimes you can spot it in their body language, then why bet the horse?
The horse itself may also let you know what its chances are by its body language. Learning to read the body language of a horse is one skill any serious handicapper should develop. All the information in past performances is just that, in the past. It only tells you how the horse fared in the past, but looking at the animal in the flesh right then and there will tell you if it is on the muscle, tucked up, washy, sharp, or any other number of things that will affect its performance.
The point is that paddock notes, both of the horse in this race and its last race, give you a big edge over many other bettors. It also lets you compare the horse's condition to see if it is improving or declining. When your winning edge is only a few percentage points to begin with, a few notes and a bet here or there can be the difference between making a profit or losing money betting on horse races.
